CARNIVAL: Marketeers CC celebrate Bridgwater Carnival victory
THE last time Marketeers Carnival Club topped the polls at Bridgwater Carnival came in the same year as Freddie Mercury wowed the LiveAid show at Wembley Stadium, Magnificent Seven film star Yul Brynner died at the age of 65, and future motor racing champion Lewis Hamilton was born.
Marketeers, so often the bridesmaid and never the bride, last took top honours at Bridgwater Carnival back in 1985 with Just Clowning Around.
But it is official – 33 years of hurt have come to an end in glory.
No doubt there has been plenty of clowning around and celebrating from Marketeers for the annual Black Sunday festivities following the club’s success on Saturday (November 3, 2018) with its fantastic cart entitled Consider Yourself (Dickensian).
The club’s victory came following five second-place finishes in the previous six years in the Local Feature Cart category with The Locker in 2017, Warp Speed Space Machine in 2016, Noah in 2015, Battle of Atlantis in 2014 and Roller-Ghoster in 2012.
Since 2000 the Marketeers have finished in the top three on 13 occasions with 2018 finally being the year when they clinched first place.
Marketeers’ other top three finishes were 2011 with Flying Machines, 2008 with Ghost Riders, 2006 with Superheroes, Rock 2003 in 2003, The Year of the Dragon in 2002, Next Stop Clowntown in 2001 and Oh No It Isn’t in 2000.
Reigning champions Gremlins had a disappointing night as the club suffered technical problems with its Highway to Hell cart.
Marketeers’ victory was only the fourth time since 2000 that a club other than Gremlins had taken the top spot.
Those other occasions came in 2013 with Ramblers CC and its entry Swarm Force; Ramblers CC in 2003 with Midnight Express; and Ramblers CC again in 2002 with Invasion Force.
