SEDGEMOOR NEWS: Lucky to be alive

FIREFIGHTERS are saying that people were lucky to be alive following a bedroom fire at a home in Highbridge.

The alarm was raised by the occupants at just before 11pm on Wednesday (July 25, 2018) to the fire in Elder Close.

The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service was told that everybody had safely evacuated the property as it mobilised two fire engines from Burnham to the scene.

Firefighers found smoke and flames coming from a first-floor bedroom of the semi-detached home.

They quickly dealt with the situation and made the property safe, while clearing it of smoke.

A spokesman said: “There were no casualties and duty of care was left with the owners.

“Unfortunately there were no working smoke detectors in the house. The owners were lucky to have smelt the smoke and raise the alarm.

“If this happened during the night – it could have been a different outcome. Only takes seconds to test your smoke alarms.”
