SCHOOL NEWS: Top of the class for Northgate Primary School
THE new Northgate Primary School in Bridgwater may have only opened earlier this month but it is already getting the thumbs-up from its first pupils.
The school opened on Thursday, September 7, 2017, for the first time to welcome reception children to the Explorers Class and Years 1-2 children to the Blake Class.
The new school, which was built on the site of the former Blake Hospital, will be part of a Bridgwater hub for the Clevedon Learning Trust.
The CLT has also welcomed Westover Green Community Primary School and Puriton Prmary School to its family of schools this summer.
Chilton Trinity also has an Academy Order to join the CLT sometime in 2018. The CLT also has a secondary school and 3 primary schools in Clevedon.
Executive headteacher Heather Good, who will also oversee Westover Green Community School, said: "It is just fantastic to be starting with a truly blank slate - the facilities are amazing, the classrooms are incredible - I feel very lucky to be here."
The school currently has 43 children and the plan is for a new class to start each year until the school reaches its 420 capacity. With the developments and increase in population in Bridgwater this may happen faster should the need arise.
Zoe Elder, director of education for Clevedon Learning Trust, said: "We have a great opportunity to collaborate and share expertise across the Trust.
“Staff from all the Trust schools meet regularly to share their expertise and develop teaching in both primary and secondary phases. In this way, we support progression, share curriculum and develop innovative teaching approaches to benefit every pupil.
“In addition, as a family of schools, pupils from all of our Trust schools have access to rich and varied opportunities to learn together through our Cultural and Creative Programmes, STEAM Cafés and Pupil Leadership Programmes."
Chief executive John Wells added: "We are delighted to have a new hub of schools in Bridgwater and Northgate Primary School has already benefited from being part of a family of schools.
“The journey of the school for the CLT has been very swift as the Trust was selected in December to work with Somerset Council to build the school and then take over the running of the school. Work began in January and staff have worked incredibly hard over months and particularly during the summer holiday to have the school looking so fantastic and ready for opening in September.
“The Trust works together as a family of schools and we are very keen to ensure each one keeps its own identity. In this way each school can build and develop different strengths but is supported by the shared resources and collaborative approach to learning"
A 26-place nursery for children age 30 months to four years will also open at the school from January 2018.
