BRIDGWATER NEWS: Hampton by Hilton hotel plans for Woodlands Court Business Park

PLANS have been unveiled to build a 123-bedroom hotel on the Woodlands Court Business Park on the outskirts of Bridgwater.

Zeal Hotels have applied to Sedgemoor District Council for full planning permission to go-ahead with the project on the business park in Bristol Road on the A38 – next to the giant Morrisons distribution centre.

Planning documents submitted to the council have indicated it will be a Hampton by Hilton hotel which has other nearby venues in Bristol, Exeter and Bournemouth.

The hotel will be built over five-storeys and the application comes with plans for associated infrastructure, access, landscaping and parking.

The applicants have said that the need for the hotel is because of the expected increase in accommodation requirements due to the building of the Hinkley Point C power station.BRIDGWATER NEWS: Hampton by Hilton hotel plans for Woodlands Court Business Park

“The Hinkley Point C development is generating significant growth for hotel and spaces in Bridgwater,” said a spokesman for the applicants.

“When considered alongside the importance of the tourist sector in Bridgwater, this presents an opportunity for new hotel development.

“The benefits of such development were recognised by the council in granting planning permission for a similar development at Junction 24 of the M5 a year or so ago.

“The proposal aims to target this same opportunity at a similarly accessible site and has been the subject of positive pre-application consultation with officers at the council.”

Hinkley Point C is estimated to generate 900 jobs at the new power station for more than 60 years and about 25,000 employment opportunities throughout the build period for nearly a decade.

A number of hotel proposals have been given approval by the local council in recent times with accommodation requirements set to become extremely important to Bridgwater in the years ahead.

Hampton by Hilton, formerly known as Hampton Inn, is a brand of hotels trademarked by Hilton Worldwide.

Most Hampton hotels are independently owned and operated by franchisees and there are more than 2,000 throughout the UK and 16 other countries.

The earliest any decision will be made on the application by Sedgemoor District Council will not be until September 23, 2017.
