SEDGEMOOR NEWS: Resurfacing works for the A39 near Chilton Polden

MAJOR resurfacing works on a key route between Bridgwater and Street will take place next month.

Around 620 metres of the A39 near Chilton Polden will be repaired, a stretch of road extending west from the eastern end of the Olive Mill restaurant car park.

This scheme represents the fourth phase of significant highway maintenance investment in to the A39 corridor between Bridgwater and Street in recent times.

Due to the narrow width of the road and to keep both the public and workforce safe, it will be necessary to close the road to traffic while work is underway.

To keep any disruption to a minimum, this will be restricted to night working only (7pm to 7am) with the road reopening during the day, although temporary traffic lights may be required at times during the day.

Works are scheduled to begin on Monday, September 4, 2017, and take approximately five nights.

Cllr John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s spokesman for highways, said: “The A39 is a very busy road linking Sedgemoor and Mendip so it’s vital we make sure it is kept in good condition.

“Unfortunately, this does mean some short-term disruption, but I’m pleased we’ve been able to plan the road closures to take place at night which will significantly lessen the impact.

“Please plan your journey carefully and be assured we’ll be working hard to get the road open again as soon as possible.”

A suggested diversion route suitable for all vehicles can be found at www.travelsomerset.co.uk/roadworks or will be clearly signposted on site. As with any road closure, local drivers are free to find their own alternatives.
