BRIDGWATER NEWS: Rollercoaster Youth Club wins award

THE Rollercoaster Youth Club on the Sydenham estate in Bridgwater has achieved Somerset County Council’s Safe and Welcoming award.

The Rollercoaster group is an extremely popular club for young people from Sydenham and the surrounding communities.

It is well attended and offers an extensive range of activities and opportunities, as well as a safe and relaxed atmosphere where young people can unwind with their friends.

The Safe and Welcoming benchmark scheme accredits the club’s safe practice and appeal to young people. The club was required to build a portfolio containing witness statements, policies, health and safety practice and building safety details in order to obtain the award.

Cllr Diogo Rodrigues, of Bridgwater Town Council, said: “It is wonderful news that the Rollercoaster Youth Club has achieved its Safe and Welcoming benchmark.

“We were in no doubt that the youth club would achieve this easily, as we know of the great work that Julie and the young adults do to ensure that every one of the young children are in a safe and inviting environment when in the club. Well done to you all!”BRIDGWATER NEWS: Rollercoaster Youth Club wins award

The county council’s children and families spokesman, Cllr Frances Nicholson, added: “It is reassuring for parents and carers to know that their local youth club is safe, sustainable and young people friendly.

“Once a youth club has gained this award, it becomes instantly recognisable to young people and their families as a great resource for their community.”

Valid for three years the award is a condition of Somerset County Council youth club funding. The youth club is supported by grant funding from Somerset County Council’s Youth & Community Service, receiving £4,000 in 2017-18.

The award is split into sections looking at what young people can expect to experience at the club, the people who contribute to or work in the club, and policies, procedures and paperwork.

The Rollercoaster Youth Club is the 39th club in Somerset to achieve the award.
