BRIDGWATER NEWS: Village hall officially opened at Wembdon
WET weather failed to spoil the party or the enthusiasm on Friday (July 21, 2017) as the iconic new Wembdon Village Hall was formally opened by Dame Elizabeth Gass.
Dame Elizabeth, who served as Lord Lieutenant of Somerset from 1998 to 2015, was joined at the lunchtime opening by a large number of funders, hall users and local dignitaries including Bridgwater and West Somerset MP Ian Liddell-Graingers.
It was ten years ago back in 2007 when parishioners in Wembdon developed the vision of creating a facility fit for their village and capable of serving the wider community.
Local people got ‘onboard’ and the Wembdon Village Hall and Playing Fields Trust was formed. The next ten years saw the group work with the landowner, S. Notaro, and a large number of funders including Viridor Credits, The Football Foundation, Sport England, The English Cricket Board, Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset County Council and the EDF Community Impact Mitigation Fund.
The team also worked with a range of smaller but no less important funders to secure the finances to build this iconic facility which boasts a large main hall which can be subdivided with a soundproof wall, a community lounge, a play group, and outside facilities including football, cricket and rounders.
Local community events also helped towards the £2.5million project and the hall has been greeted with great comments from people.
Since opening for bookings the hall manager, Lyn Tyrrell, has received a lot of interest from people.
“It’s amazing to see the interest from a variety of groups from weddings to private parties and dance classes who wish to use the hall,” she said.
“Wembdon has a facility that they are very proud of and one that the community can utilise for a variety of events.”
The Wembdon Village Hall and Playing Fields Trust is very grateful to all of the funders and people who have helped to create this iconic facility.
