LEISURE: Newt Beer and Music Festival sizzles under the sun
THE 26th Newt Beer and Music Festival held over the weekend proved to be another big success and basked in glorious weather.
Thousands of people attended the festival which was held on Friday, July 7, 2017, and Saturday, July 8, 2017, off the A38 between Bridgwater and Taunton at North Newton.
The festival-goers were treated to some fantastic live music and barrels of lovely beer and cider to keep them refreshed throughout the day and night.
The origins of the festival go back to 1991 when three local people with children at North Newton Community Primary School decided to hold an event to raise money for the school’s minibus appeal.
The festival has grown over to the years to what it is today – a major event in the local social calendar which still helps to raise money for the school and other local groups.
In 2016 the festival committee was able to help support groups to the tune of just over £11,000.
The minibus, meanwhile, is still running and the children enjoy many trips and activities all supported by funds donated by the festival.
Photographer Brian Bateman went along to the 2017 festival to grab some pictures for the Bridgwater Press news/leisure website.
