BRIDGWATER NEWS: Mansion House hotel plans set for go-ahead

PLANS to turn a Bridgwater town centre pub into a 21-bedroom hotel and restaurant are being recommended to be given the thumbs-up by Sedgemoor District Council.

The council’s development committee meet on Tuesday (July 4, 2017) to discuss the application submitted by Mr A. Ulgut for the Mansion House Inn in the High Street.

The Mansion House is a large two-storey Grade II listed building dating back to the 18th Century and has historically been used as a pub until its closure back in 2015.

The proposals include turning part of the ground floor of the pub into a restaurant and lounge area along with five hotel rooms, while there would be a further 11 bedrooms on the first floor and five within the roof space.

Councillors have been told in a report that the rooms would be created by sub-dividing the existing space into smaller rooms using stud walling with sound insulation and plasterboard.

Bridgwater Town Council has, however, already voiced its objection to the plans with fears about over-development and a lack of parking.

But planning officer Liam Evans does not believe that parking would be a problem and has recommended that councillors give the application permission.

“The building is within a five-minute walk of several car parks in the town which are publicly accessible 24 hours a day,” he said. “Taking into account the existing use of the building, which potentially could result in a comparable level of footfall, it is not considered that a lack of parking would be problematic given its location within the heart of the town.”

Mr Evans added: “The loss of the public house is regrettable but would not represent the last of this use in the town centre.

“The proposals include a restaurant at ground floor level which would be used in conjunction with the hotel and therefore overall the building would continue to make a contribution to the town’s economy.

“This proposal seeks to convert and re-use a suitable existing building within a town centre location and is therefore compliant with the aspirations of our policy to support hotels.”
