BRIDGWATER NEWS: Cornhill flats plan to be given approval?
COUNCILLORS are being recommended to give their support to plans to build a block of eight flats in Bridgwater town centre.
The proposals include building a four-storey building to contain the flats on land at the rear of the former post office in the Cornhill which is currently used by Ladbrokes.
The application was originally granted planning permission in 2010 and renewed in 2013, although the proposals have now lapsed again.
Sedgemoor District Council’s development committee meet on Tuesday (July 4, 2017) to discuss the application submitted by applicants Cornhill One and Two Ltd.
Bridgwater Town Council has opposed the proposals on the grounds of over-development and will harm the amenity for existing properties.
But planning officer Dawn de Vries has recommended that councillors on the development committee give the application the thumbs-up.
“The application site was previously used as the rear service yard which served the former town post office,” she said in a report.
“The service yard is now surplus to requirements and whilst the host building still remains in an active use, the rear service yard is no long required.
“Concern has been raised by the town council that the development would result in over provision in the area. But our housing manager has said additional housing in this area would meet the demand for smaller units – something which is expected to grow significantly over the coming years.”
And she added: “The proposal would also result in the redevelopment of this brownfield land within close proximity to the town centre.”
